This attractive species with the golden spines and white flowers is endemic to the Islands of San Esteban in Sonora, and Las Animas ("San Lorenzo norte") and San Lorenzo in Baja California (Mexico). It is found in dry creek beds, beaches, and low hills, growing among desert scrub on the island. Echinocereus grandis has a very restricted range but is abundant over the entire island.
