Coryphantha sulcata (Kimble County, TX) 20 seeds
(Pineapple cactus)
Skill Level:
Germination: intermediate
Growing: intermediate
Range: from the Red River to South Texas plains, westward, almost to Brewster County, east to Austin County, Texas
A sometimes solitary cactus which commonly forms clumps up to 20" in diameter, C. sulcata is fairly smooth except for a protruding central spine. Stems are spherical to egg-shaped, up to 5" tall and 3" in diameter. Flowers emerge near top of the plant and grow to 2" wide and 2" long. They are golden yellow, becoming orange or red towards the base of the petals. Use a free-draining soil mix. Water and feed with a quarter-strength, balanced fertilizer during growing season. Full sun exposure is okay, but some shade during hottest part of day is helpful.
Germination of cactus seeds is about timing, temperature, quality and age of seeds, and establishing a method for sowing, Some species have a higher germination rate, and / or lower germination time than others. For that reason I can't guarantee a specific success rate.
