Astrophytum asterias "Super Kabuto" ' with its fuzzy epidermis is actually the most popular cactus cultivar. It is easily distinguished from the normal Astrophytum asterias by the absence of white tufts. Instead, it has a mosaic of extensive white spots that make the plant look intensely maculate.
 
"Superkabuto" originated from a mutation that occurred in nature. Just one field-collected individual of A. asterias was found in 1981 by  Mr. Masaomi Takeo in an American garden centre. It produces large yellow flowers with orange throats which are often larger than the plant itself. The underground portion is fleshy, turnip-like, with fine diffuse roots.
 
Mature plants can reach 0.75"-2.75" tall and 2"-6" wide, and is dotted with numerous minuscule tufts of bright white wool (hairy scales). These hairy scales are usually loose, sprinkled over the stem in irregular patterns, or sometimes arched around the areoles. Cultivated plants possess sometimes very dense and big hairy scales. The short white wool on the surface is thought to be a substitute for spines which normally provide some shade for the plant The flowers are apical, diurnal, and radial, 1"-2" long, 2"-3.5" in diameter and open widely. They can be pale yellow to deep yellow with orange/red throats. 
 
The blooming season in habitat is mid-spring and each flower lasts for only one or two days, but the plant may flower at any time during the warmer months of the year if adequate water is provided.
 
Use a loose and fast-draining, mineral planting medium: small gravel, coarse sand, decomposed granite, pumice, perlite, etc. Young plants need strong but diffused light, and water them only after soil has dried. After the first year, water them less frequently and gradually introduce them into stronger sunlight. Don't use a pot much larger than root ball since soggy soil may cause rot.
